Bingley, in yesterday's post, began with Mary Beard's Free tickets to the opera, in which she mentions a book on Agrippina the Younger by Judith Ginsburg, Representing Agrippina, Constructions of Female Power in the Early Roman Empire.
This had me rushing to my bookshelves, where I found Agrippina: Sex, Power, and Politics in the Early Empire by Anthony A. Barrett, 1996 (paperback 1999, unfortunately in a very small print, bad for aging eyes). It provides the reader with a nicely complex picture of Agrippina. The BMCR review is quite helpful to our book chat on The Kingdom of the Wicked.
Unfortunately, the Ginsburg book, edited Eric Gruen and only 160 pages long, is very expensive. I couldn't find a review, but it is summarized here. However, according to Mary Beard, a review at the TSL is coming up soon.
Anthony Barrett has written another book relevant here: Caligula: The Corruption of Power. The related BMCR review is helpful only in a negative way.
