Some in our chat last night professed reading Peter S. Wells, The Barbarians Speak: How the Conquered Peoples Shaped Roman Europe – which together with Tacitus‘ Germania is our next assigment – a bit of a challenge.
Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2000.02.30 may explain why. I personally think the review is a bit over-critical, I find the book quite informative on the whole, even though it has to be read with a grain of salt.
Another print edition of Tacitus pointed out to me is Agricola and Germany (Oxford World's Classics) by Tacitus and Anthony Birley.
Observe the identical book cover images!
